Public perception of anorexia are recurring ideas in the story. Another idea that surfaces in the book several times is the way in which the public, including medical professionals, view anorexia. For instance, in Marya's introduction to her book, she becomes angry with the doctor treating Jane because he does not recognize the implications of Jane's eating disorder. In fact, he does not even appear to know what an eating disorder is or how dangerous it could be to this recovering girl.
