Urbain's positive growth manifests itself is his new awareness of the beauty that surrounds him. Forced to witness the atrocities of war, he is still able to find beauty in landscape, and in the people around him. His artistic sensibilities grow during the war, and he becomes a better painter and a better person as a result.
