Meaning of mare?

Mare represents female empowerment and the strength of sticking to one’s cause. Throughout the novel, Mare remains committed to the idea of a Free Republic of Norta. She gives up her love for Cal in hopes that he will abdicate the throne. She moves her entire family to Montfort and commits to the Scarlet Guard. At the end of the novel, Mare accepts her newfound freedom by heading out with her family to discover more about herself.
