The theme of embracing one’s birthright, as well as being willing to establish your own identity away from it, is important in every main character’s story. Evangeline, Cal, and Mare fight for a new life where decisions made by their ancestors does not determine their own future. While it is okay to accept one’s birthright, one should not not use it to oppress the less fortunate.
