Want
How do Elizabeth's feelings about her husband's desire to pursue a career in carpentry change over the course of the novel, Want?
.
.
Elizabeth says that when her husband initially changed vocations, she was proud of him. She was similarly disinterested in bending to societal prescriptions of success. However, the couple's monetary troubles in the narrative present, make her regret encouraging him to begin carpentry at all. The author uses Elizabeth's husband's work as a representation of all artistic dreams. While the desire to create something outside the system initially feels empowering, the same desire might lead to despair or discouragement. By the end of the novel, however, Elizabeth requests a loan from her parents, so that her husband can preserve this dream.
