When does Walk Two Moons take place?

The story is set in the United States in a fairly modern-day setting. The story was written in 1994 and that seems a reasonable time setting, though the setting could also have been somewhat earlier. Modern modes of travel are available; however, there is no mention of computers, cell phones, or other technology that might indicate a recent time setting.
