In Chapter 32, the three continue their travels through Wyoming. Gram is very excited at the prospect of seeing Old Faithful. At the motel, Gram is so excited that she can’t sleep. Sal goes on with her story. Sal sees Mrs. Partridge all dressed up outside. She says her son, Jimmy Birkway, is picking her up. It’s only now that Sal learns that her teacher, Mr. Birkway, is Margaret’s twin brother. The next day at school, Phoebe ignores Sal the first part of the day. In English class, Mr. Birkway reads more from various journals. After reading several passages, he reads Sal’s story of seeing Sugar kiss the tree. He then reads a passage from Phoebe’s journal about Mrs. Cadaver and Phoebe’s suspicions that Mrs. Cadaver had buried her husband in her backyard. Though Mr. Birkway changes the name, he’s obviously upset by the words. Phoebe rushes from the building as soon as class is dismissed.
