The home on Kabir Street House where Sriram is living with his grandmother at the beginning of the novel is described as a place of comfort and pleasure, insulated by the wealth and class status that Sriram’s family has in the community. Here, at the Kabir Street House, there is abundant food and good furnishings. Unlike some of the village huts that Sriram eventually visits alongside Gandhi, here Sriram enjoys a bed with a proper bed frame and warm, abundant food.
