St. Francis of Assisi is said to have discerned his vocation at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli located in Assisi, Italy. There, resolving to renounce the world and live a life of self-imposed poverty. Tradition holds that he died in the surrounding city. Weil visited Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in 1937 and had a spiritual awakening of her own as recounted in the letter "Spiritual Autobiography."
