Du Bois met Marcus Garvey at a conference in Jamaica. Garvey became a great leader, who noticed that all the main leaders of the NAACP were either white or looked white. At his uging, James Weldon Johnson, an ex Bookerite Black man, was put in charge of bringing in new recruits to the organization.
