Violeta is unsatisfied in her marriage to Fabian; she finds him exceedingly tedious and bemoans their lack of sexual connection. Julián is, in many ways, the opposite of Fabian, which makes him all the more appealing to Violeta. He is attractive, worldly, and bold. He represents an opportunity for Violeta to leave her familiar life and instead embark on a wild and passionate adventure.
