The language of the memoir is largely told in a reminiscent conversational tone. It is written at a middle grade level. The n-word is included in the book because this is a word that Smith was called. By including this word in its entirety, Smith allows his readers to experience the violence of the word. Because this is a book about sports, Smith also includes world records and statistics throughout his book. All of this combines to add credibility to the book while the first person narration gives the book a personal touch that a biography or an academic account of the events would not have been able to provide.
