As Smith stands on the Olympic podium, he holds up his fist in protest, while reciting the “Our Father” prayer in his head rather than paying attention to the lyrics of the national anthem. This demonstrates how he uses his faith as a source of strength during one of the most pivotal moments of his life. His faith is not just something that he lives while he is at church. It is something he frequently returns to and uses as both a source of strength and as a source of motivation to help him do what it is he believes he is supposed to do.
