Why do people view Diego as controlling in the novel, Very Recent History?

Diego, Chad's boyfriend, is not too vividly developed, but there is a sense that of the two of them, Diego is the more stable, the more secure, and the more mature. This leads John and other members of their circle of friends to see him as controlling.
