Eduard's father is an ambassador. He and his wife's ambitions for their son are portrayed as a metaphorical prison from which he longs to escape. Like the staff at Villete, Eduard's father and mother seem to be intended to be perceived as symbols of a restrictive society that does not value, and maybe even fears, things that are different from what is held to be the status quo. Their actions in having Eduard declared insane and moved to Villete can be seen as metaphoric manifestations of society's determination to not be transformed in any way by thoughts, perceptions, and experiences that in any way challenge their perceptions of security.
