Dr. Igor is the chief doctor and administrator at Villete. He is depicted as the most complex of the characters in the novel, and he is driven by a variety of motives and hamstrung by a variety of circumstances. In the book's final chapter, he is portrayed as a kind of selfish monster. We also the sense, however, that his patients have ultimately been transformed for the better as a direct result of his actions. Igor is in fact, and perhaps unbeknownst to himself, a good man doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.
