The author uses Vera’s teahouse as a representation of how easily one can get stuck in the past without realizing their mistake. In Vera’s perspective, the teahouse is failing because others do not see its value. Yet, in the other character’s narration, the teahouse is actually run down, grimy, and dated. Only by revamping the teahouse does Vera realize that she needs to move forward with her life if she wants to find success and live a more fulfilling life. This, in turn, means that the transformation of the teahouse mirrors Vera’s own character arc.
