Why does Aunt Matilda change her favorable opinion about James in the novel, Vanity Fair?

James nearly charms Aunt Matilda into leaving him her money until she discovers that he is a heavy drinker and catches him smoking in her house. As a result, her favorable opinion quickly changes and he loses his chance at the inheritance.
