How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Valencia and Valentine?

The author uses music as a recurring symbol throughout the novel that represents loss of control. Valencia constantly hears music playing from her neighbor’s apartment and feels at a loss when it suddenly comes to a stop, which further stimulates her paranoia.
