For Jeanie and Julius, music is a symbol of connection. Whether times are peaceful or difficult, the siblings turn to music to create unity and contentment between them. Their love for singing and playing stringed instruments originated from their parents, and also attaches them to their familial origins. Throughout the novel, the siblings frequently play their instruments in order to resolve issues between them, or to reconnect amidst trying circumstances.
