Underland
What is the importance of "The Kalevala" as noted in the nonfiction book, Underland?
.
.
The Kalevala, Finland's folk epic, represents warnings for human beings regarding energy stored under the surface of the earth. MacFarlane says that although the epic might contain a warning, human beings did not heed it. This is connected to scientists attempts to leave behind warnings about nuclear storage facilities. Many different types of warnings are seen as inadequate due to the amount of time they need to last, but one linguist suggests that mythology might help warn people or beings of the future about the sites. The Kalevala represents the power of myth and also human arrogance and our propensity to ignore our own stories.
