How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Under the Whispering Door?

One example of symbolism can be found in the husks, Cameron in particular, who represent the loss of one's self when grief or fear takes over. This is especially important when comparing Cameron to Nancy as she is beginning to lose herself to her desperation. Cameron, in comparison, crumbled because of his terror and has nothing left to hold on to. Both of these characters need outside intervention to break free of their despair. Furthermore, Cameron is able to accept the death of the man he loved and trust that they will see each other again as long as he finds the courage to pass on.
