Symbols are a large part of the book and, as such, are symbols of power. The first mark the reader is introduced to is Andras’s mark. It not only serves as a physical sign of proof for Kennedy that demons exist, but it also ties the members of the Legion together. They all have one fifth of the mark on their arms and that’s how they know that they’re a part of the Legion. It’s a way that their common history comes together and, therefore, is an important part of who they are and what they do as they try and destroy Andras.
