Why does Caroline hate London in the novel, Unbecoming?

Mary lived in London after she began her acting career, and it is where she lived when Caroline came to stay with her while Pat was recovering. Caroline hated London mainly because she recalled all the parties with Mary wanting nothing more than to show off her daughter to her friends, and then being left on her own for long periods of time.
