Uglies by Scot Westerfeld is a futuristic sci-fi novel about a dystopian society that values beauty over everything else. From the moment they are born, the people in this society are told that they are ugly until they turn 16 and are allowed to undergo a beautification process that makes them look and sound like everyone else. Though they don't look identical to one another, everyone after this change is made without one flaw. The main character Tally must deal with peer pressure on epic levels as she is told that she must track down her new best friend, Shay, and return her to the surgery center. If she fails she will remain ugly her entire life. While on her journey to find Shay, Tally learns a great deal about herself, what true beauty is and what the government is really doing to people when they make them 'beautiful'. She also meets a boy named David, who rejects the reality of the government and helps her to learn a new definition of beautiful.
