Bosch is a grizzled, veteran detective in San Fernando -- a small town located entirely within Los Angeles. He is the protagonist of the novel, appearing in every scene. Bosch is notably unconcerned with material goods, comfort, or just about anything else in life other than successfully solving criminal cases. He often works around the clock without getting any sleep. Bosch's only notable interest outside of his work is establishing a positive relationship with his college-aged daughter, Maddie, whom he had essentially ignored earlier in her life while focusing on work.
