As Bosch is being flown around by the pill mill bosses while undercover, out the window he sees: "the bright colors painted on the main-made monument known as Salvation Mountain. From high above he saw the warning: JESUS IS THE WAY" (245-246). This message of hope in the middle of both the barren desert and in the middle of the hopeless outlook faced by the addicts is cruelly ironic.
