When Jerry Edgar visits Bosch's house at night, after the work day, Bosch shares some bourbon with him. Edgar immediately notices the prestigious label, saying that if Bosch had not opened it, "'You coulda bought your daughter a car'" (137). Bosch lack of concern with either the superior value or taste of the bourbon is an extension of his no-nonsense attitude towards outside appearances, similar to his willingness to work inside the jail cell
