Mickey Haller is Bosch's half-brother and lawyer, and he is one of the only characters in the novel who is laid-back and optimistic. Once Bosch presents the basics of the Borders / Cronyn case to him, Haller takes the evidence and absolutely runs with it, managing to clear Bosch's name completely within essentially a few short minutes in court. However, there is a rift between Bosch and Haller after the victory, as Bosch realizes that Haller had leaked the story to the Los Angeles Times -- temporarily soiling Bosch's reputation in the public -- as part of Haller's legal strategy.
