Importance of Door nailed shut

In Bosch's first meeting with Cisco, Cisco anecdotally tells him that he had broken his addiction to painkillers by having a friend nail himself shut in a room with 30 days' worth of food (176). Although Bosch does not initially react to the story, he clearly remembers it because he attempts to create a similar environment for Elizabeth Clayton, to help break her addiction. This extreme solution shows the immense difficulty in breaking an addiction to painkillers.
