In the same way that Bosch prematurely made assumptions based off the intact evidence stickers in the Preston Borders case, he realizes that he made a similar assumption in the Esme Tavares case, based off of the evidence of her newborn being left abandoned in a crib. Bosch had made the assumption that Tavares, as a parent, would have more integrity than to abandon her child, and thus had to be murdered -- an assumption turns out to be completely false. This realization pushes Bosch further into a depression about the state of the world despite successfully solving each case.
