At the start of the novel, Jing-Mei Woo's mother wants the American Dream. Because of this, she pushes Jing-Mei to become a child prodigy of any kind.... her mother's ticket to wealth and a new home. Over time, Jing-Mei begins to fight back, telling her mother that she wants her to be something she's not, she tells her mother that she wishes she'd never been born.... that she was dead like her mother's children before her. All of this anger boiled over after an unsuccessful piano recital. In doing this, she shocked her mother into silence, and the hurt stood between them, but Jing-Mei never played the piano again.
