He thinks that gaining more titles will make him be happier, because he will finally get the respect he feels he deserves. He believes by joining d'Artagnan that he can gain his title. He is a large person and incredibly strong. We can see this when he literally pulls out a bar out of the window in the jail so that they can snag the guards.
