Significance of Caroline's Diary

Caroline brought a diary on the test with her to use to chronicle her experiences. After the students form a community, Cowper attempts to force Caroline to hand over half the pages left in her diary because there is no other source of paper. Caroline refuses, but does agree to use the diary to keep notes on town meetings.
