In the story, Don't Tell Me You Don't Know, the narrator’s Aunt Alma comes to visit her where she is now living, far away from the narrator’s mother and relatives. Aunt Alma tells the narrator her mother is disappointed she will not have children, and the narrator responds by saying that the sexual abuse that her mother never stopped rendered her sterile. Alma still begs the narrator to try to love her mother, who, like the rest of the women in the family, love the narrator very much.
