The church is near enough to Gifty's apartment that she can hear the church bells every Sunday, and she often sits in on services at the church even though she does not "know the first thing about Episcopalianism" (263). Attending the church services is a way for Gifty to feel the sense of spirituality that has been lacking from her life, and she enjoys admiring the church's portrait of Christ. "I never pray," she explains, "never wait to hear God's voice, I just look. I sit in blessed silence, and I remember" (264).
