Why did Gifty's father choose to leave his family and return to Ghana in the novel, Transcendent Kingdom?

Gifty's father struggled to adapt to life in the United States, particularly as he was subjected to racist attitudes, being suspected of theft and detained at Walmart multiple times because he was black. He left the family and returned to Ghana when Gifty was four years old. He later divorced Gifty's mother and remarried.
