Who is Spud from the motion picture, Trainspotting?

Spud is a member of Renton's heroin-addicted circle of friends, but unlike the others, Spud is gentle and nonviolent. Spud's actions and demeanor suggest that he is somewhat of an innocent. Although he knows that he is making bad choices, he stays more childlike in his acceptance of his life than any of the other characters. He displays shock over the death of the child and confusion about the way the others around him behave.
