John's grandfather, a World War II veteran, came to love the beauty of a quiet life after violent battles and after learning how the Japanese can see beauty in even the simplest things. It is the beauty of the farm, the woods, and working the land that has given his grandfather the ability to put aside the ugliness and appreviate the beauty around him.
