"The beauty in ordinary things can distract us during our worst times and provide us with hope?." Does this life lesson mostly connect to clay and his cancer, or the horrible fights in ww2? (Tell me why it connects)

Explaining why it connects includes:

Worst times: is it ww2 or cancer?

What simple things (beauty) clear his mind (distract) from that worst time?

What hopes does he have ?

I think it connects to all the characters including Clay and his cancer. The natural elements might not take away his cancer but nature provides some peace to his anxiety.
