In Chapter 6, John thinks about the different ways people have of hunting deer –such as driving them toward hunters, walking around to find random deer, or hiding out near a deer trail. John both stalks and stands to find a deer. He does his best to move quietly, as deer are not quiet when they move along. John moves into the swamp beyond the woods, toward the deep grass and open space of the bog. He later comes upon a deer nest beneath a stand of willow trees, and he follows tracks away from the nest. John believes he must have startled the deer upon his approach, and then he realizes in the hour he has been out, he has not thought about his grandpa. He knows you cannot do two things at once while hunting. So, he focuses only on hunting.
