Why did Cole regret trying to burn the at.oow (blanket) in Chapter Ten?

Cole regretted attempting to burn the blanket because it would have afforded him a source of warmth and protection.

He had no idea where the blanket was. How could he have ever tried to burn it? It would have protected him from the cold, the rain, the wind, and the insects. It might even have protected him from himself.
