Why did Cole mistakenly view the Spirit Bear as a coward in Chapter Nine?

Cole mistakenly viewed the Spirit Bear as a coward because it didn't finish him off.... it didn't kill him. He believed that the bear's hesitation showed weakness, that it was waiting for him to become so weak that he would be unable to fight back.
