Why did Cole envy the dead, baby sparrows in Chapter Ten?

When Cole observed the dead, baby birds, he noted that their necks were strained towards their nest... the place that was their home. Cole envied the babies because they had a home, something that he, himself, had never had.

Cole envied the dead sparrows. He had never really known any home.
