Who is Edwin, and why is he accompanying Cole to the island?

Edwin, a Tlingit elder, lives in Alaska and oversees Cole during most of his first part of his year on the island. Edwin is a wise man, who knows what Cole needs to do in order to find healing, but he also knows that Cole will have to make the journey on his own.
