What is the importance of the baby birds in the novel, Touching Spirit Bear?

During the storm, Cole notices a nest of baby birds when he is near death, after being attacked by the Spirit Bear. Cole initially feels anger toward them, but he later cries for them when he realizes that they died in the storm.
