How is Cole's determination to live illustrated after the bear attack?

Cole eats worms, bugs, a mouse, and the chunks of fish from his own vomit. He drinks muddy water by digging a hole by his hand and dribbling the collected rainwater into his mouth. His actions all seem incredibly horrible, but they are evidence of Cole's determination.
