The author uses the ferry as a symbol of both hope, as well as a connection between two worlds. There is the world of the island, and the world of the mainland. The ferry brings people back and forth from one to the other, but also allows the island to remain isolated. The ferry serves as a transition between two places. For Aaron on the ferry, this is a transition between his old life and a new life.
