How and why did Alex end his romantic relationship with Dez in the novel, Touch?

In the beginning, he claims, he began dating Dez because she was the daughter or Marshall Cross, and could possibly give the sixes information. Alex, however, found himself falling in love with Dez, and rather than continue using her, he set it up so she would find him with another woman.
