Power and greed make up another theme in the story. Nathan Gamble can be seen as the personification of the individual so consumed by profit and the power that money brings, that he is willing to use any means to achieve those ends. He is perfectly comfortable using blackmail, condoning theft and murder, and wielding his power and influence to attain any goal he has set. One can find many examples of Nathan Gambles among current notoriety, including such individuals as Bernie Madoff, or corporations, such as Enron, who have abided by the Machiavellian premise that "the end justifies the means." The current economic crisis in America can be seen as the result of greedy banking and Wall Street executives, who used their power and influence to bring America's financial situation to the brink of crisis, only to use their continued power and influence to save themselves at taxpayer's expense. Greedy corporate executives are willing to jeopardize an entire nation's economic structure, huge pension funds, and individual retirement assets in the name of non-regulated free enterprise.
